One day, a curious and talkative disciple went to visit his Master. The Master’s house was small and spartan. Looking around, he noticed that his Master had kept a set of three monkey statues – See no Evil, Hear no Evil and Speak no Evil – right in front of him where he sat to meditate.
Sensing his curiosity, the Master asked him, ” Do you know why I keep these three statues?”
Wanting to show off his knowledge to his Master, he replied immediately, ” Master, they constantly remind us to see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil!”
Thinking that he had done well, the disciple was shocked and taken aback when his Master said, ” You are just too foolish to know the underlying truth. Now listen carefully! The first one says, ‘I can see all the evil that you cannot see!’ The second says that he can hear all the evil that you cannot hear!’ But the third one says, ‘I will not repeat all the evil which I see and hear! Do you understand?”
The disciple was dumbfounded. May we all learn this truth today!
