One day, a talkative disciple went to visit his master. The master’s house was small and spartan. Looking around, he saw that his master had kept a set of three monkey statues – See no Evil, Hear no Evil and Speak no Evil – sitting directly in front of the master.
Sensing his curiosity, the master asked him, ” Do you know why I keep these three statues?”
Wanting to show off his knowledge, the disciple quickly replied, ” Master, they can constantly remind us to see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil!”
Thinking that he had done well, the disciple was shocked and surprised to hear what the master said. “Your knowledge is too shallow. You have not grasped the underlying truth : I can see all the evils that you cannot see. I can hear all the evils that you cannot hear. But I am not going to repeat all the evils that I see and hear!”
The disciple was indeed dumbfounded!
